Ebola Virus Guidelines
CDC has posted infection control guidance for suspected and confirmed Ebola virus patients at http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/hcp/infection-prevention-and-control-recommendations.html

This guidance is consistent with information the Seattle King County Health Departmernt provided in their Health Advisory on 28 July 2014 http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/communicable/providers.aspx

In addition, CDC now advises all US residents to avoid nonessential travel to Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia because of an unprecedented outbreak of Ebola (see http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices).

Seeking Board of Directors Members for ARNPs United of WA State

We need your help. This October, at the Primary Care Conference, we will hold an election for a new board of directors. 6 BOD positions are open; the old board members have the option for running, as does every AUWS member. The bylaws call for 12 members on the BOD, with 4 of them serving as Board officers – President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The Chair of the Legislative Committee is automatically on the BOD as well (Legislative Committee members meet separately.) Board officers are determined by the board at their January retreat. The term of the service for board members is 2 years. The time involvement is approximately 5-10 hours per month, as we have board meetings every 2 months (which can be attended via conference call) and subcommittee work based on your area of interest.

If you are interested, know someone you would like to nominate, or have any questions about this opportunity to serve Washington’s ARNPs and their clients, please feel free to email tracy at npcentral.net.
Suicide Prevention Legislation

The incidence of suicide in Washington State exceeds the national average, at 14 per 100,000 deaths, making it the 8th leading cause of death in our state, compared to 10th nationally. To ameliorate this statistic the 2012 Washington State Legislature introduced HB 2366 requiring 6 hours of training in suicide assessment, treatment and management for all health care providers. Opposition expressed by professional groups argued the legislature is not best qualified to determine what professionals need to improve and maintain quality performance. While an acknowledged deficit exists in training and continuing education for professionals in suicide risk assessment, data to support that training alone can improve outcomes, without developing more robust systems to access behavioral health services, is lacking. The 2012 bill passed, but applied to a limited number of allied health providers, not ARNPs.

HB 2315 was introduced by Representative Orwall in 2014 and provided the legislature compelling arguments applying the same requirement to all health care providers. The successfully approved bill includes three components: six hours of training for all health care providers; RNs, ARNPs, MDs, PAs, DOs, PTs, DCs in suicide assessment; a statewide suicide prevention plan, and a consultation service for primary care providers in rural and urban areas for at risk patients of all ages. Initially the bill required training every six years, however professional organizations, including ARNPs United, convinced the legislature to accept six hours in total.

A University of Washington School of Nursing study presented the Suicide Education Study to the Legislature in 2013 summarizing the existing data on training in suicide prevention. They conclude that mandatory suicide prevention training might be beneficial in reducing suicide rates in Washington. Implementation of this bill provides an excellent opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of suicide risk assessment, without removing barriers to access mental health services or increasing in-patient treatment. We remain concerned that without enhancing access and services, the ability of primary and specialty care providers to positively impact this public health problem is diminished.

Providing Quality Family Planning Services

CDC and HHS Release “Providing Quality Family Planning Services” document
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Population Affairs and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are pleased to announce the release of “Providing Quality Family Planning Services - Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs.” The recommendations define what services should be offered in a family planning visit and give all reproductive health and primary care providers the information they need to improve the quality of family planning services. This is the third of three evidence-based documents intended to guide reproductive health and family planning care for all providers.

The recommendations were developed collaboratively by CDC and OPA and based on a rigorous systematic review of the available evidence and extensive input from a broad range of clinical experts. An on-line version of the recommendations is available as an MMWR Recommendations and Reports on the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr6304a1.htm?s_cid=rr6304a1_w
Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed several new tools to assist health care providers in accessing and using the U.S. Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use (U.S. SPR):
U.S. SPR eBook for iPhone and iPad. To view this eBook on your iOS (iPhone or iPad), an eReader is required. An eReader is an app that can display eBooks on your mobile device or tablet. If you do not have an eReader app installed on your device, search the App Store for an eReader, like iBooks. After an eReader app is installed on your device, you can download the eBook and open it on your device.
U.S. SPR Medscape video describes how to access and use the U.S. SPR.

Prescription Review Practitioner Interface Changes in August

This is an update from Prescription Review, the Prescription Monitoring Program for Washington State, regarding the prescription drug query system that health care providers use.

The practitioner user interface for Prescription Review is changing. Prescription Review is the online system you access to query patient histories for controlled substances in Washington. The changes to the system are designed to make it more intuitive to use and navigate, to provide for a more enjoyable user experience, and to give the system an overall updated and contemporary look and feel.

Before the new user interface is released we are giving you the opportunity to review the changes through online tutorial videos that are posted online at www.doh.wa.gov/pmp under the Education Videos page. This will allow you to become familiar with the interface first. Before the interface release we’ll provide an additional email reminder before the release date which is August 25, 2014.

If you have any questions please let us know.

Sincerely,

DOH Prescription Review Team
