[Maine-NPs] Big News - Senator Collins introducing bill

Dear Maine NPs,
Kathy, Liz and Miki have worked very hard to have Senator Collins introduce
this bill. There were problems with wording that could limit your practice.
Kathy Forti-Gallant and Liz Duke were at a conference in Washington at a
critical time and met with Senator's Collin's staff on this issue. Whenever
one of the board members went to Washington DC, she/he met with the
senator's staff. Miki MacDonald and Kathy Forti-Gallant met with Senator
Collin's staff in Bangor. Now the hard work for the rest of us begins! As
nurse practitioners, it is our responsibility to contact Senator Collins and
thank her first for her efforts to improve patient care and for making it
more cost effective. Send those personal stories about how this will affect
your patients. Use examples. Contact your NP friends in other states and
have them contact their Congress people. The work has just begun. This is a
quality and access issue for us. It also takes money out of the pocket of
medicine. Get active and write those letters.
Have a great summer!
Hannah Pressler, PNP
Past President MNPA

Dear Maine NPs,
This is great news and a big step toward addressing the issue of NPs being
able to order home health care. We still need to send letters of support
with examples of how it affects patient care to help get this passed, as
well as letters or emails thanking Senator Collins and Priscilla for their
work on this issue. Calls, letters, emails to Senator Collins and any other
Congress people including those in other states will be very helpful. Thanks
in advance for your help in supporting this bill.
Kathy Forti-Gallant

Senator Collins' office. Attached is the bill and her remarks.
Kathy Forti-Gallant and I will be meeting w/ Senator Collins on monday

going to her about this issue. But now you can write and thank her
and give examples that help her illustrate to others why this is
important.
If you have NP friends in other states, please encourage them to
contact their representatives to support this bill.
I already called Senator Mikulski's office since I use to live in Baltimore!
Thank you all for support... We're getting closer!

Miki...
I wanted to make sure that you had a copy of the draft legislation
that Senator Collins is planning to drop early next week to allow
advanced practice nurses (nurse practitioners, clinical nurse
specialists and certified nurse midwives) to order home health care.
Also attached is a copy of the Floor statement that Senator Collins is
planning to give when she introduces the bill. Right now we are just
waiting for sign-off from a lead Democrat cosponsor -- we have targeted
Sen. Kent Conrad from North Dakota and Barbara Mikulski from Maryland as
potential lead Ds. Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon has also signed on as
an original cosponsor. We also have letters of endorsement for the bill
from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American College
of Nurse Practitioners, the American Academy of Physician Assistants,
the American College of Nurse Midwives, the American Nurses Association,
and the National Association for Home Care and Hospice.
I will keep you posted...
Priscilla Hanley
