National Provider Identifier (NPI) News
All health care providers - including those serving Medicare beneficiaries - will be required to apply for a new National Provider Identifier (NPI) that will be used in all electronic health care transactions. The NPI will replace all other provider identifiers currently being used. Providers may begin applying for an NPI immediately, and must receive one no later than May 2007. CMS is alerting providers that health plans could begin requiring the use of NPIs before that time.
The National Provider Identifier initiative was mandated by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and requires that NPIs be used by health plans, health care clearinghouses, and health car providers that process claims, handle claim status inquiries/responses and eligibility inquiries/responses, as well as other transactions.
Nurse practitioners can apply for an NPI by going to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov. Organizations may submit an application of behalf of a provider. Applications can be submitted online now or via regular mail. More information can be found at: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/npi_provider.asp.
Also, an instructional web tool, called the NPI Viewlet, is now available for viewing at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/apps/npi/npiviewlet.asp and under "HIPAA Latest News" at www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2 on the CMS website. This tool provides an overview of the NPI, a walkthrough of the application, as well as live links to the NPPES website where the learner can apply for an NPI. This tool is designed for all health care providers.
