[NP-Clinical] Colonoscopy prep

Oh hurrah, finally something I can help with!! I have a colonoscopy prep sheet from the VA: (they call it GoLYTELY Protocol - don't know if that makes any difference if you use something else)

Five days before procedure:
Unless your provider has instructed you differently,
STOP taking any of the following medications:
Aspirin - Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) - Naproxen - Clinoril - Etodolac - Lodine - Celebrex - Vioxx - Bextra

Four days before procedure:
STOP taking prescription blood thinners such as:
Coumadin - Plavix - Ticlid

Three days before procedure:
Start a low fat/low fiber diet utilizing the following guidelines:
DO NOT EAT anything with:
Small seeds/Nuts - Fibrous vegetables - Cucumbers/Beans/Peas - Whole grain cereal

DO NOT EAT:
Beef products - Dairy products (milk, cream, butter, ice cream, cheese) - Soups - Carbonated drinks - Ensure or other similar supplements

AVOID: Metamucil

SUGGESTED FOODS - MAY EAT:
Turkey (boiled or baked) - Fish/Chicken/Pork - White rice - Baked potaoto - Pasta - Soy milk - Tuna in spring water - White crackers/White breads - Carrots - Acorn squash - Yogurt (non dairy) - Eggs - Coffee/Tea w/sugar or sugar substitute - May add NON-DAIRY creamer.

Two days before procedure:
Prepare GoLYTELY solution with water to the line on the jug and chill the solution in your frig
2 days clear liquid diet

One day before procedure:
Begin a "liquid diet"
DO NOT drink anything red or purple in color.

YOU MAY HAVE:
fruit juice without pulp - popsicles - kool-aid - crystal lite - jello - Power ade/Gatorade - Bouillon - water - apple juice - white grape jc - white cranberry jc - coffee/tea w/sugar or sugar substitute and NON-DAIRY creamer

1200 NOON
Begin drinking the GoLYTELY solution. you must drink 8 ounces every 20 minutes until 1/2 of the solution is consumed. this will take you approximately 3 hours. it is best to drink each glass quickly, rather than slowly sipping it.

5PM - Finish drinking the remaining GoLYTELY solution, 8 oz every one hour.

Day of procedure:
Do not take anything by mouth. the only exception to this is that you may continue to take all prescribe seizure medications.
