Hmmm, very interesting. I personally think sharing a photo would be a
great learning experience for all of us and no identifying info is there so
can’t see that it’s different from the journals/learning cme’s etc. I’m
sure you got her permission before taking the pics so would bet shed be
interested in the free feedback from the GYN folks? I’ve never seen a
purple polyp (say that 3 times fast or make it more of a tongue twister:
purplish peducultaed pragmatic protruding polyp!
Will be interested in what folks have to say but a picture is worth a
thousand words. My guess is, if you try it, the listmaster will stop it if
it’s NOT OK.
Thanks for sharing,
Priscilla Merrill FNP

Subject: [NP-Clinical] cervical abnormality
Hi all-
Need a little help. 40 year old female in for pap test. Hasn’t had one in 7
years. Normal menses-no problems. Never had abnormal pap before. Monogamous
relationship for 20 years with only 2 sexual partners in lifetime. On exam
her cervix in the superior aspect is absolutely normal, but inferior portion
from about 9 pm to 3 pm there is a purplish growth like lesion that almost
appears encapsulated-not like any polyp I’ve seen but it could be this. Pap
smear was normal with endocervical cells present and HPV negative. No
insurance or money to afford $100 + for gyn consult which is what the cost
is around here for a new patient appt. Had her return in a couple months.
Cervix appeared the same. I took a couple pictures of the cervix but was
uncomfortable putting in body of this email without getting some feedback
from the group if this would be appropriate as I am not sure if this is
appropriate etiquette. Suggestions? I know in an ideal world I would refer
her for a biopsy but I hate to send her if some gynecologist is going to
take one look and say that’s a polyp or some other common disorder. The
difference between this and polyps that I have seen is that this actually
was adherent to the cervix. I welcome and appreciate any thoughts and if
you would like me to post pictures I can. Thanks for all your ideas. Laurel
