I tried sinus lavage myself last year. The outcome was costly. I had nasal
congestion, you know the typical spring cold. I used a nasal saline (Ary)
sinus lavage, the kind you use water and a dry package mixture. Did one nostril
at a time. The first nostril did fine and then came the second one. Immediate
pain in the top of my mouth. I ended up in the ER, facial CT, ruptured sinus
cavity. Surgical repair. ENT said to much pressure in block sinus cavity
caused ruptured.
Thinking back now I laugh and thin glad it happened to me and not one of my
patients. The ENT said he has seen this around 200 times in his 12 years of
practice. I am really cautious now about using sinus lavage.
I recommended using a saline nasal gel now as the force of stream is not as
strong. I do not recommend using the type of sinus lavage you have to mix.
