I was in the Navy and my husband retired from the Marines. I agree there is
no safe branch of military service. If one joins the service he/she should
have a clear understanding of the number one job requirement -- serve your
country -- meaning the person may die for their country.
I went to visit my sister and brother-in-law back in 1974 in Hawaii. My
brother-in-law was in the Army. A short time later I called home asking for my
father's permission to get married. Before the military Chaplin would perform
the marriage my husband and I had to go through some classes. Chaplin Rimmer
told me your soon to be husband is a member of the United States Marine Crops,
do you understand what that means? Before, I could answer the Chaplin said -
this means his number one priorities are the United States and the USMC.
You and any children the two of you will have will always come next. Chaplin
Rimmer also told me my husband's job included war and with war came death, he
asked if I I fully understood the meaning of this and was I willing to
sacrifice my husband for my counrty. We were married a few days later.
We were married 12 years when I enlisted in the Navy Reserve. We had 4
children and I was a LPN. When I signed the papers and took the oath, I fully
understood, my job included defending my county and giving my life if needed.
To make a long story short - it does not matter which branch of military
service one joins defending the US is the number one job requirement - this
means going to war - and giving one's life if needed. No one should join any
branch of service if unwilling to commit to this requirement.
