Hi Chris:
First, let me say how sorry I am that you have had this disease. When
the other side begins to cast suspicion most women feel like their body
and its immune system is working against them. My wife went through this
and was a real trooper , made appropriate decisions and is a fifteen
year survivor. As you are aware this is close to a total cure in this
disease. As we have discussed this subject I have been attuned to a few
things such as the fact that many of us are not aware of the values of
MRI for breat disease, that insurance companies are holding tightly to
the purse strings on this issue and that most women who understand the
implications are willing to spend cash for the exam.
The week after next the ACC ( American College of Clinicians) will be
having a BOD teleconference. I am going to suggest that as an advocate
body of both professionals that we take a very proactive stance and that
we go head to head with every carrier in the nation. We do more than
advocate for our profession but also for the patients to whom we serve.
I'll let you all know the outcome.
Warmly,
Bob

Subject: [NP-Clinical] Breast MRI's
Having just finished treatment for a Stage I breast cancer (mammosite
radiation, no chemo, thank God), I'm now having to deal with a
non-palpable mass in the other breast found on MRI in November. Had an
U/S done (kind of backwards order) last month, and got another one of
those "gird up your loins" letters from the radiologist saying I had to
have it seen to. Had I not had the MRI as part of the work-up for the
first tumor, I'd still be clueless to its existence. Fortunately,
Amerihealth didn't squawk.
As far as I can see, there will be more MRI's in my future. Don't know
which is worse - the torture of the mammogram, or the MRI. I do know
that the 'cradle' you rest in, motionless, for 1/2 hour was not designed
by a woman who ever had to go through it!
