Good Morning Listmates,
In my practice, as I'm sure in yours as well, I have several obese patients.
Unfortunately, it's getting to be that a BMI in the 40's and 50's is all too
common. However, I'm concerned about those who are higher than that.
When I opened my office, I made the decision to get exam tables that could
hold up to 500 lbs. I'm glad I did, because some of the other topped out at
350 lbs and I would have exceeded that a long time ago. Just last month, I
had to purchase a new scale as I could not weight several pts (it topped out
at 303 lbs).
Last week I saw a woman who is now weighing 450+lbs (BMI 80+). My concern is
that my chairs, exam tables etc will not be able to hold her and put my
practice at risk for liability issues. I also don't feel I should have to
keep purchasing equipment to handle those who exceed the safety limits of
the furniture etc that I now have. Purchasing specialized equipment is not
an option at this time.
I'm worried that suggesting she find a new practice that could accommodate
her [size] will come off as discriminatory. At the same time, I cannot
ensure her safety when she sits on furniture in our office.
I know I'm not alone in this, and would appreciate hearing how other offices
are handling this. [Please note.this is not a question about medical
treatment, but about liability issues].
Thanks,
