[NP-Clinical] UTI/lactobacillis

I will say that I’ve used probiotics in many patient scenarios.
Unfortunately, the NP’s that I work with in college health, who went to Dr.
Robert Hatcher’s conference in DC last month, said that in the case of
GYN/vag discharge, the evidence on probiotics hasn’t panned out like they’d
have hoped. He’s the OCP guru who wrote Contraceptive Technology. If you
ever have a chance to go to one of his workshops, GO!
I still think it can’t hurt and may help but was hoping the studies would’ve
supported. As we know, a future one might. Research certainly isn’t
perfect. The studies have supported probiotic use in other, mainly GI,
etiologies.
The bad side is that they’re very expensive.
Good luck. It DID say that Augmentin was a good choice for abx and would
likely temporarily alleviate sxs’. Looks like the baking soda sitz was the
best bed. As long as there’s no Arm or Hammer in the sitz. Ouch. . . ; < (

Hi,
Medscape has several older articles on probiotics and utis-just type in a
search on the topic and they pop up. Paula

Priscilla,
Thank you. That helps. It would explain the cyclical nature of her
symptoms. Since I clearly haven't treated her correctly, I am guessing she
will be in again soon.
