Maybe he has an avulsion fracture of the ulnar collateral ligament (I
think that's the one) - gamekeeper's thumb/skier's thumb. If so,
sometimes they need surgery, sometimes not. If that's what it is, it
affects the person's ability to pinch with thumb & forefinger. That
could affect many daily activities especially if it's the dominant
hand. But your friend needs an orthopedist to examine & give an opinion.
