Hi Priscilla,
I'm not Ted but--
Are you talking about a KOH slide or a fungal culture? I think of a fungal culture as a specimen (like toenail clippings) you send to a lab; it takes a few weeks for results and they normally identify what they find.
On a KOH slide you can see buds without hyphae sometimes if it's a yeast (candida etc.)
