Acyclovir is indicated over the age of two. Valtrex is a prodrug of acylovir and has a category B for nursing and pregnancy so I am not sure safety would be an issue. Most newer drugs don't have studies on children to establish safety and efficacy. What is the weight of the child?

I know as a child I had cold sores all the time. I would have taken anything to have prevented them!!
I know now as an adult, if I feel one coming and take a Valtrex, it never even starts so I don't know why the efficacy would be in question either.

If you don't feel comfortable with valtrex, why not acyclovir?

Just my 2 cents
Deb

Does anyone have any documented evidence of the safety and efficacy of the use of Valtrex for herpes labialis in 12 year olds? My collaborating doc has a 12-year-old boy who experiences significant herpes labialis almost monthly. According to the PDR, studies have included adolescents 12 years and older, but also indicates that efficacy in pre-pubescent children has not be established.
