Cardiothoracic Surgery – Inpatient

A candidate for the Nurse Practitioner position 
must possess advanced knowledge and skills
that qualify her/him to function as a primary 
health care provider. The NP serves as a member
of our collaborative health care team, 
functioning under the direction of a supervising
physician. As a physician extender, the NP 
obtains health histories, performs physical exams
and initiates appropriate treatment for 
cardiothoracic surgery patients in the inpatient units at
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The NP uses 
effective verbal and written communication
skills to document care and to consult with 
physicians, as appropriate, regarding patient
issues. He/she serves as a resource in the 
promotion of optimal patient care, including
participation in quality initiatives and staff and patient education.

Candidates must be a graduate of an accredited 
school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner
Program and licensed as a NP within the state of 
Virginia. He/she must be eligible for
prescriptive authority in accordance with state 
regulations and as authorized by the Virginia
Boards of Nursing and Medicine. Credentialing 
requirements for Carilion Roanoke Memorial
Hospital must be met. He/she must qualify for 
malpractice insurance and be accepted by
Carilion Health System’s malpractice insurance 
carrier. A minimum of three (3) years acute
care clinical experience is preferred. Schedule 
flexibility is required to meet patient needs on
all shifts and weekends. Basic Life Support 
certification is required. Advanced life Support
certification is preferred.
