Acute Care Physician Extenders (NP or PA-C) --Neurology In-patient Ward
Service
University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC
The Department of Neurology is seeking two independent physician extenders
(NP or PA-C) to be members of the team of health professionals that
cares for
patients hospitalized on the Neurology in-patient service at the the
University of
North Carolina Hospitals, an academic university-based teaching hospital in
Chapel Hill, NC. The Neurology team cares for acute-care level patients
with a
variety of neurological illnesses. The physician extenders will play in
an integral
role in the mangement and care of these patients. The physician
extenders will
be a member of a team of nurse practitioners and Neurology resident
physicians
who together will provide seamless care for patients on the service
under the
direction of an attending neurologist. The two physician extenders will,
as a team,
provide 7-day-a-week coverage with ten-hour patient care shifts and shorter
administrative shifts, for a total of 40 hours per week. Weekend
coverage will be
split between team members, depending on team member preferences. They
are expected to perform duties and responsibilities with a significant
amount of
autonomy and self-direction once the training period, if necessary, is
complete.
The physician extenders will be assigned a case load of patients deemed
medically stable by the attending and will have primary responsibility
of making
daily rounds, making routine care decisions, and writing daily progress
notes.
Additionally, the physician extenders will interface daily with clinical
care
management, nursing, and other Allied Health services to facilitate patient
discharge and follow-up.
The position requires two or more years of inpatient care experience as
well as the
ability to perform independently once trained. Experience in a
neurosciences acute
care unit is not required but would be beneficial.
For Nurse Practitioners: The educational requirements include a
Doctorate or
Master's degree from an accredited school of nursing and completion of an
accredited nurse practitioner program in the area of acute care.
Candidate must be
a current Registered Nurse with licensure in the state of North
Carolina, have a
current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the state of North
Carolina, and
maintain ACLS certification.
For Physician Assistants: The educational requirements Doctorate or
Master's
degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program. The individual
must be
certified by passing the NCCPA-administered Physician Assistant National
Certifying Exam. Candidate must hold licensure in the state of North
Carolina, have
a current certification as a PA-C by the state of North Carolina, and
maintain ACLS
certification.
