FNP is easier to move into any position, whether is be neonatal or derm. You are a jack of all trades and then you can get more specialized training - it may even just be on the job training. If you were positive pedi is what you want to do then fine, do a PNP program and that would work well with the neonatal or any other peds career. However, PNP would limit you, say if you then decided to do derm/plastics. I have never regretted getting my FNP - I have worked in Occ Med, straight Peds, Internal Med, Travel Med, OB/GYN, and Urgent Care. Now, I do ER, Urgent Care and hospitalist work, including rounding on CCU/ICU patients. I can get trained in anything as an FNP - you are a bit more marketable. I have a friend who is an FNP in Derm and she loves it. She feels like she is solving a mystery on some of the skin ailments she sees. Also, Ted Scott, on the NP Clinical listserve is a Derm NP for Kaiser and he seems to like it too. This will be a great background for whatever you do. In addition, you just might find that while derm/ plastics interest you now, during your clinicals you find that another area intrigues you. I was a critical care nurse who thought that I wanted to work in cardiology or pulmonology upon graduation. I ended up loving family practice and have happily practiced in that setting for years. When you are getting ready to take your NP boards, please keep me in mind. My company and associates have helped more than 40,000 NPs successfully achieve certification in the past 15 years.
