[NPInfo] I'm appalled!

Priscilla, There are tons of Assisted Living Facilities here, and most have 2/3 of their patients with Alzheimers. If the Alzheimers is extremely severe, they have hallways that are locked, so the clients dont wander out and get lost, but they do an assessment for feeding, toileting, dressing, etc..that is all standard. And there is an activity club with chair exercises, bus trips if able, etc (these are all severe dementia clients) They are 1/3 the price of what you are paying. I would speak to the senior centers, Center for Disability and Aging, or Adult Protective Services. They usually are in charge of these organizations. Also in the Skilled Nursing Facilities, contact the ombudsman there, and they usually are the ombudsman for the ALFs too. Hospice works closely too with these organizations, and many people who are put on hospice, do better and live for years. Plus you get the additional services and nursing support. I am sorry if I missed something about the
unlicensed vs licensed, but if you are paying out of pocket, it is the care you want. Forget the "license"... It is the same with in home care givers, you could find a fantastic person, and they are not "bonded/licensed", but the bonded/licensed ones, are getting minimum wage and the agency takes the rest, and often these people are not trained or caring, and often dangerous. I am serious, the snfs are often dangerous and negligent. Carla/Oregon

The best I can say is find someone who is friends with someone who does
this. See if you know anyone in Hospice and tell them straight up you
are interested in that kind of setup. Perhaps try the people (State)
who vet licensed alfs- they may know of unlicensed alfs that do not
raise red flags. Try your local nsg org as well as the np groups. Best
of luck,

Maggie
