[NPInfo] Re: PhD in Nursing

Hmm. Ok. I try to keep an open mind on things, and these people (from UW)
were represented at the Annapolis conference, but I have to say, this looks
really weird. Maybe too weird. Who the hell would bother getting a PhD in
"nursing science" without having any contact with the field of nursing
prior? At first I thought, ok, it's a bridging program (they get basic
nursing courses before or in concert with graduate level study in some
areas). But no, it specifically says "preparation in a clinical specialty is
not provided...."

I think I get what they want to do: if "nursing is a science" then
logically, you could study it at the advanced level like anything else
(geology, English lit, whatever). It's strange to me that no one has asked
about state title protection statutes and what this might mean for such
graduates (I could even see myself filing such a complaint against a UW grad
who wasn't an RN). Having said that, I imagine that the only people
interested in this degree would be nurses already anyway (maybe faculty?). I
think I'm more disturbed that no GREs are required. (Although I don't know
if they had a good reason for this--or if it's just marketing.)

UW is a pretty good nursing school, so I hate to slam their methods right
out of the gate. These are really smart people, but I have to agree with
those of you who think this smells a little too funny. This is like Case
Western's "ND"--only too late did they realize that "ND" was already taken
by "naturopathic doctors" (now licensed in 14 states), and had to go back to
the drawing board. So, I guess I just wonder what the
Dr-Frikken-Frankenstein some of these people think they are creating
sometimes.

Here you go...the line is in the first bulleted section....and frankly, I'm
horrified and pissed off. I pick my battles VERY carefully and this is
certainly one I think worth fighting. I definitely think someone who gets a
PhD in nursing should BE a nurse!!!

Could somebody tell me where you read about such a program?

I think that is a hoot. What a sad commentary about our profession, that a
student can get a PhD degree in Nursing with no prior training in the field.

Wouldn't that be kinda like me enrolling in a doctoral program in Physics or
Engineering without any prior degrees in those disciplines?

Yes, that's correct.
