To paraphrase Pres.Richard Nixon said (allegedly), if you keep telling the
people the same story (lie) over and over again they will come to believe
you eventually.

So, if Physicians keep telling the public that ONLY they practice medicine,
and that only they are qualified to do so, then the American consumer
public, as well as other medical professionals, will believe it! Does
anyone still believe that Blacks cannot Coach winning football teams, that
Blacks cannot become winning Quarterbacks? Sadly, there remains a
prevalent, but not so loudly spoken, institutionalized prejudice against
"Nurses" by Doctors/others that if "they" were smarter they'd become
doctors, or they would have become/or they would have gone to Medical
School, etc. etc. etc. - all of which are particularly demeaning, and
hopefully for the most part are untrue.

Look at the debate in the various states as to whether NPs can practice
independently, or whether NPs must be "supervised" or whether there must be
a "collaborative" agreement with a physician in place, etc. etc. Happened
to eat at a hospital cafeteria a few weeks ago in San Jose area on a weekend
(niece visiting from out of state had a hockey game collision and needed to
get checked out, so we all went to wait with her at the emergency
department) and the medical students/interns/whatever they were all looked
and acted very adolescent, yet all were starting to use the "Royal We" in
their discussions about some procedures/disease etiology, etc. My
bias/prejudice suggested to me that this group of young docs gave new and
heightened meaning to the term PRACTICE of medicine. I'd have real
misgivings about any 'doctor' selected randomly from this group treating
anyone I cared about.
Do you Suppose that many health care consumers might feel the same? ("Well,
duh" as these young doctors would say).

Subject: [NPInfo] What is the true Definition of Medicine

> both these definitions of medicine. & "medicine".......both are
nouns.......no one body can "own" this definition....the practice of "health
care" includes medicine in its definition.......so, healthcare (to me) is
far broader in reach....and this is what Advanced Practice
does..........so...we're capable of far more then just "the practice of
medicine"...(my opinion). I beg someone to tell me the difference
here?.........or is this a lesson in semantics?
