[NPInfo] NP working as an RN

YOU CAN'T. If I am hired as a RN (despite my NP education) I must only work
within the scope of practice as a RN. If I don't have privileges on the
medical staff and am not the patient's provider, I can not do anything else
for that patient outside the RN role. Plus the hospital's liability
insurance wouldn't cover me for anything I did outside the role I was hired
for and, 2nd, if I had my own malpractice insurance as a NP, it probably
wouldn't cover me for working outside that role and in a RN role. You are
held to the level of knowledge and education as a NP but cannot function in
that role if you are hired as a RN. You had better not miss any little
abnormal finding and better call the MD immediately if anything is wrong. As
a NP you are expected to know more than a regular RN--and know when to call
for help!

We did an article a few years ago with Clinician Reviews. If someone knows
you are an NP even if you are working as an RN you are held to the level of
care an NP would deliver.
