[NPInfo] Call pay

When I worked for the Federal prison system, I was on call for 4 Federal
prisons and 4 nearby State prisons, with about 10,000 inmates total. Some
nights I got absolutely NO sleep due to the high volume of calls from the
nurses, some nights I never hear a peep from anyone, and a couple of times I
had to drag myself out of bed and go in and handle some emergency in person
(this is not counting being called in to sew up people during prison riots--
then I went in even though I wasn't on call). Plus we were expected to be in
clinic first thing in the morning to handle sick call and our regular clinic
appointments. For all of this, we received NO additional pay of compensation
in any form. I also worked briefly at one time for some weird company doing
nursing home visits where I was on call 24/7. I very seldom ever got
called-and, when I did, it was usually something very major and I'd just
order that the staff call 911 and get the patient to the nearest emergency
room STAT. I don't think I ever had to get out of bed in the middle of the
night and go in to see someone. There was no on-call compensation with that
job either.

Any idea how many times you might get called? Has anyone taken call before
to be able to tell you how often they got called? How long does the average

visit take or would these be "emergency" visits? Finally, how far would you

possibly have to travel if you got "called out". I took 24/7 call for our
county jail for 4 straight years, but never had to go their. Let me know
these questions and I'll let you know how I figured it out.
