OK, Dena, deep breath! :)

Typically the first thing a Palm PDA wants you to do after you turn it on
the first time is calibrate the stylus (so it knows that where you think
you're tapping and the PDA thinks you are tapping is the same place!). After
that it wants to set your time zone, date/time, and perhaps a tutorial of
"graffiti" or how you can get the PDA to recognize your on-screen scribbling
as text letters.

You should be able to read the online manual without printing it all--I
know, I know, I hate electronic books too, but it's a option if you don't
want to print out 600+ pages.

It should have come with a CD to install some software (Palm Desktop) onto
your desktop PC. It should walk you through, but basically you run the CD
and then hook up the sync cradle via a USB port and you're in business.
Plop the PDA into the cradle and it should automatically grab your email and
put copies of it in your PDA. Same thing with your contacts list.

The buttons on the PDA are pretty strait forward. Power does what it says.
There is a bg navigation button in the middle of the front lower part of the
PDA--frankly I don't ever use mine, and you probably won't either. It's
analagouf to the arrow keys on a PC, with a center button that acts like an
"enter" key. Around this nav button, there will be 4 buttons on the lower
front that quick-load the standard programs included with the PDA--contacts,
mail, etc. Just above all this, there are also 4 areas on the lower part of
the screen with icons silkscreened on them--the "house" one (upper left
corner) always gets you to the home screen. Below that one is "preferences"
which typically brings up a menu for whatever program you're in. Just play
with it, tap the various buttons and see what they do. Might as well do all
this BEFORE you start adding in stuff you don't want to lose. No better
way to learn (except perhaps catch me at a conference this year--I'm going
to be offering a 1/2 day hands on workshop and through a cooperative venture
with Palm, they are going to supply me with trainer PDAs, while Epocrates
will have them pre-loaded with their siftware. I'm still pitching this to
some places so if you have something out west, let me know, and I'll see if
they'll have me!)

Email me if you're still having trouble and I'll try to help you--or I'll
give you my mailing address and you can just send it to me--I'll add it to
my collection at no additional cost to you ;)

Andy

I received my Palm on Friday. I paid $230 (which included S&H) on Ebay and
then, of course, spent a lot more money on accessories for it <G>. I charged
the unit, set it, and now don't have a clue what to do with it... the darn
thing doesn't come with any instruction manual, although it does come with a
one-page set-up instruction sheet with big print and easy to understand
diagrams. You can the owner manual from the website-- all 600+ pages!!!
Friday night the thing started asking me questions and I didn't have a clue
what to do with it-- I not only didn't know the answers to the questions it
was asking me, I didn't know how to go about answering them in the first
place-- and there was no manual to refer to. I burst out in frustrated tears
and put the damn thing on the floor where it has been ever since. There is
an on-screen tutorial but I haven't the courage to go through it. I'm afraid
I'm old fashioned in that I want an instruction manual by my side when I'm
trying to figure something out. This might be a neat thing when someone
knows what they're doing with it but, right now, I'm pretty intimated by
it(actually, make that "scared stiff"). <sigh> Good luck-- and when you
figure out what to do with it, please let me know! Dena

 Hey Dena, and others
Did anyone purchase/receive a PDA for Xmas?
|I just found the Palm TX on buydig.com for $254.00 free shipping, 3
|year
warranty for 39.99. I think that is the site Andy Recommended. I haven't
gone the next step though and added it to my cart, but I am soooo tempted.
What have others chosen and from where??? Deb
