Where does your friend live? There is a wonderful physician we took our son to when words like autisim and aspergers were thrown in his direction. The doctors name is Dr. Richard Solomon. He is in Ann Arbor Michigan and he is a Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrician. He specializes in Autisim and has an autisim clinic. I would trust his opinion on whether it was parenting vs autisim. Seems very stange that he can behave one way at one parents house and then completely the opposite in another parents environment. If your friend is anywhere near him, I would recommend him 100%. Here is a website for him and an article about him. If you google his name you will find a lot of info about him.

Subject: [NPInfo] Autism
I have a friend who has expressed the following regarding the behavior of a 71/2 year old who is questioning the dx of autism --- any suggestions for treatment? Do you think this is definitely representative of autism -----
My grandson just started private counseling for his behavior. He
still occassionally goes into violent rages at school, and the school has
threatened to expel him if this happens one more time. He likes to play by
himself, but he does play with others when I take him to the park. He
spends half the week with his mother and half with his father.
When he is with his mother, he cusses at her, hits her, and has horrible
behavior. He does not behave like this with fathe and his wife, nor with his paternal grandparents.
After two sessions, the counselor told my daughter-in-law that the boy is
autistic. (Remember he was diagnosed as autistic at 3 1/2.
He's now 7 1/2). The counselor said his inappropriate behavior, i.e.
trying to rub against female bosoms, rubbing his hands up and down a
classmate's leg or back, putting his face in the dog's butt, etc., are
normal behavior for an autistic child because he is "wired differently".
The counselor said basically that everyone is just going to have to realize that
he is never going to be normal and will never get better (after only 2
sessions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). The counselor said he should be transferred to a
contained, special ed school for the rest of his life. And that he will
never function normally in life. This is how he will always be.
Help. Is it possible that he is autistic? I always thought that autistic
children are always off in their own world and can't stand to be touched.
He interacts fine with us, and the paternal grandmother kisses and cuddles him all the time. He loves to play Rock-a-Bye baby with me, where I will rock him in my arms then throw him up and catch him at "and down will come baby". Can you tell me where I can find some info. I feel like crying, like I just lost a grandchild.
Thanks for your time.
