As a cultural anthro major who has dedicated the majority of my career to
trans-cultural patient populations, Leininger is the only theorist that ever
made any sense to me... except that other one who advocated that nurses
should encourage patients towards self-care. Who was that?

Hi,

I just wanted to add that I agree with Shelby. Another favorite nursing
theory of mine is Madeline Leininger's Transcultural care theory, which
guided me intially as an FNP. It's basis is to help understand where the
client is based on their culture, and how that relates to others, and how to

best offer and provide care.

I hope that makes sense. I haven't thought about it in a long time, or how
it relates to mental health.

Kathleen:

I like Hildegard Peplau's Interpersonal Theory in psychiatric nursing,
although this is probably considered more of a grand theory than
mid-range. I like the simplicity and practicality of it. In a nutshell,
the theory says that healing takes place within the context of a
therapeutic relationship between the patient and the nurse. It is all
about the therapeutic use of self.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Shelby Havens, ARNP

Hi,

I am in a doctoral program and am trying to find a nursing theory to
evaluate that relates to mental health nursing. It has to be a mid-range
theory. Do any of you use a nursing theory, and if so, which one and why
do you like it?

Thanks for your help,

Kathleen Allen, DNP Candidate
