Lynn,
I am likely just missing the boat about your health, but if the nature of 
your deafness is recently acquired from illness while you were at employed, there 
is state sponsored short-term disability and your employer should have/may 
have had a long term disability policy for which you may also be eligible for. 
Your employer should know this.  Part of being "Captain of the Ship" if it is 
her own practice/business, implies knowing all the aspects of the ship, 
including your situation.
 
It would likely be ugly to go through, but I think you have recourse, and a 
severance package is a common settlement to keep it out of court. Think about 
what you want out of this and consult an attorney.
