Lynda,

We all care for you, look how many people are emailing! I know it is overwhelming right now, but you can call the unemployment office first , as it is important what that you know what quarter of the year to file in, I know it sounds wierd, but this was new to me too, and it will determine how big your check is. They will then help you, navigate the internet site for your state, as that is what you will do each week. Each week, you will fill out a short form that says "you tried to look for work, you were not out of town, you were cabable of working and you were willing to accept a part time job. Then they will send you a check each week. When I got unemployement last year, for about 2 months, it was not much, but the unemployment counselor was very nice. She said that because I had a graduate degree, that it was harder to find work, and she agreed that you want to right kind of job for your skills. They will not ask you if you turned down a job at McDonalds. They dont
expect that. They also do not expect you to work nights or drive far if you tell them you cannot do that. As Paula said, you dont have to take a job that is not right for you. Regards, Carla

  Lynda,
Go here http://www.unemploymentoffice.net/State_resources/Virginia.htm to apply for unemployment benefits. You should be covered for 6 months, and in NC I had to apply to 2 jobs a week. (I sent emails out, but phoned for something interesting)I made it last 6 months to get what I wanted. You do not have to take anything less than what you want.

I lost my job twice-once in '95 and once last november when my retail clinic job closed. Both times I took the entire 6 months of reduced pay. For the 2nd time I was enrolled in school and had student health insurance (feel like signing up for classes this spring?). Minute Clinic is always hiring, as is Evercare, but I don't know about your area. You might check the SONs for a clinical faculty position, if that interests you.

I know what a shock this is-and it does pass. I will be thinking of you, Paula

Sue,
I would appreciate that...I only know that when company lays employees off, they qualify for unemployment...but I have never been in this position before...I do not even know how to navigate the system..

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I know first-hand how devastating and scary job losses can be. I have a sister who is a HR manager. Can I forward your email to her and ask if she has any words of advice or thoughts on your situation?

(Guess that 60,000/yr was just so much more than I was worth). > I understand that not being there for the past 5 weeks has made it bad for her, but I took no salary for the time that I have been off on sick leave. She gave me no notice or severance package. She said she would not cancel my health ins. until the end of the month. She said that she decided to tell me this way so my husband could be there for support. (I almost actually said out loud "How thoughtful of you". But I did not. I just got home from packing up my office. I also know that having to take time off for more dr appts than I ever thought I
would have is hard on the practice. I had started back 1/2 days on Thursday, and there is no way I can do a full day yet. > I am still too upset to start polishing the CV and looking for another job, but is there some recourse that I might have? I had no contract and that is one lesson hard learned today...although I did have one at my last job and there was so many ways to get out of it that it was pretty worthless.> And how much disclosure do I have to give my next employer re: my hearing loss? I am afraid that I will not be able to get another job when someone finds out I have a total hearing loss in one ear.> Sorry to cry on everyone's shoulders but I am in a spot that I have never experienced before and have no guidance.....and I am doubly scared because we just bought another house and have not yet sold ours so I am going nuts thinking about double mortgage payments!> Thanks in advance for any advice you can share..> Lynn W>
