  You are doing amazing. I never could surf! I have chronic vertigo from a medication reaction (scopolamine), so I am interested in how the nerves are affected.  I am sure you said it in your initial report, but what test did they do that was able to detect the damage to the 8th cranial nerve/vestibular system? Carla/Oregon

I am getting PT for coordination and balance. Something (I have hx of A-fib so ? stroke v/s viral etiology) took out the lt branch of the 8th crainial nerve and the vestibular system...so no hearing on the left, and in the beginning I was unable to even walk without falling...I am much better but it still requires effort to do everything, including just stand there. Because I slalom ski, wakeboard and surf still, my balance had always been pretty good....I am walking by myself now but you might not want me to carry anything breakable or of great value! They are going to try to fit me with hearing aides the end of this month that gather sound from the left and funnel it to the rt ear. That sounds weird but I am willing to try!!

And I want to hug each and every one of you! I know there will be a day
when I say "By, am I GLAD this happened". But that day was NOT today (and
will not likely be tomorrow either!). And while I do have the resources to
go for a short time, I can't do it indefinitely and I think the fact that we
just bought the new house is really what is making me nuts...but mine is on
the market (pitiful as the housing market is!) and I am just going to hope
and pray that it sells quickly at a good price....The Powers that Be did not
bring me to this point in my life, only to abandon me now so I just need to
chill and have a bit of faith...and work even harder in PT....I just wish
that at some time in my life, someone had given a lecture on what to do when
this happens....
