[NPInfo] RE: NPInfo Digest, Vol 20, Issue 46 Medicaid coverage - who qualifies?

Catching up on e-mail... There was a lot of talk a couple of days about
various programs to help those who are without job, medical coverage, etc.
Regarding Medicaid: Medicaid is available only to people with limited
income. To qualify for Medicaid you have to be very poor (have less than
$2K (in income & resources - home does not generally count against you), and
meet other qualifications such as disabled, family/mom with children, etc.
Each state's qualifications vary somewhat. Some things they look at are your
age, current pregnancy, disabled, blind, or elderly, income/resources (like
bank accounts, real property, or other items that can be sold for cash -
includes your spouse's income too, of course), U.S. citizen (or legally
admitted immigrant). There are special rules for those who live in nursing
homes and for disabled children living at home. Children can qualify for
medical coverage even if the parents don't always.

 Here's a link www.cms.hhs.gov/MedicaidEligibility that might help
understand better the qualifications, etc. This link has another link near
the bottom so you go get specific state information.
This link takes you to each specific state, if anyone is interested.

How about, "Ask your doctor as his hand is on the doorknob after 5 minutes
of him telling you what to do if you even have your appointment since he
usually gets called to the hospital during office hours"
Only your doctor can tell with his size 10 gloves if you have an enlarged
prostate- - and by the way, due to increased costs and cutbacks, he can no
longer afford to stock lube since it cuts into his annual golfclub fund.
Cynical lately, heck yeah!

The FDA does not care if an advertiser says, 3ONLY YOUR DOCTOR CAN DIAGNOSE
DEPRESSION2 but God forbid you should have a mouse pad without the necessary
risk information...........read below.

FDA Tells Scios to Stop Distributing Natrecor Mouse Pad, Pen The FDA posted
on its website yesterday a letter sent to Johnson & Johnson unit Scios Inc.
objecting to a mouse pad and pen promoting heart drug Natrecor. The mouse
pad shows a sedentary hospital patient drowning, the letter said, suggesting
the drug is indicated for seriously ill patients who have difficulty
breathing while at rest because of fluid accumulation within the lungs. The
FDA objected because the promotional pieces did not include risk
information.

In today9s san Diego Union and my response.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/business/20071107-9999-1n7clinics.html

Dear Editor:
I read the concerns of Tom Gehring, CEO of the San Diego County Medical
Society regarding the retail based clinics opening in the area published in
Union Tribune on November 7, 2007. I take umbrage with the comments ascribed
to Mr. Ghering as they are unfair and unsubstantiated by any medical
evidence.
A representative of a medical organization should know better. He states;
""the person providing the care should know their limitations2. One would
think that would be something that all clinicians should do, why limit it to
NPs and PAs? While I agree that any competent practitioner can miss
something, why would he choose these two professional groups to point this
out about, and not also his own? There are close to 180,000 nurse
practitioners and physician assistants practicing all across the USA. Many
of us are in satellite clinics, many of us are in rural and poor
neighborhoods, and we are not missing problems that are much more complex
than seen at these retail clinics. There are PAs and NPs in Iraq and
Afghanistan doing complex trauma care and saving lives daily. A PA was just
awarded 3Army Flight Surgeon of the Year2.
That PA practices excellent medicine. NPs and PAs can handle the problems
seen in these clinics, believe me. Furthermore all of these clinics have
strong physician involvement. Our emergency medicine system is in crisis. It
is time someone else tried a new approach to treating these types of
problems. You do not need a doc to give shots, treat pink eye, swimmers ear
and test for pregnancy. And to finish his remarks with the quote2 If you
want to be a doctor, go to medical school2 is
undeserved and out of context. All of these clinicians are doing what is
within their training and scope of practice. All of them were trained to do
this. This is not about wanting to be a doctor. Mr. Ghering if you really
think we are not trained well enough to do this, show us the studies that
prove it. There are none. I wonder what the real concern here is is? With
true respect, David Mittman, PA Secretary. American College of Clinicians
Natick, MA

Great letter! Look forward to a response if we are "so blessed to deserve
one in his ever-so-humble opinion!
