As has been mentioned here before, northern CA pays higher than southern
CA-- the two are NOT related. This came from an article on the front page of
the business section of the San Francisco Chronicle. I think it was in
yesterday's paper-- maybe Friday's. The hospital that was offering the great
salary was California Pacific Medical Center, a Sutter Health affiliate (I
previously worked for Eden Medical Center, another Sutter affiliate). All
the hospitals up here are union and they pick on the Sutter hospitals a lot
because Sutter has LOTS of money and can afford to pay the salaries. The
nurses in this area are the highest paid in the entire country-- and that's
BEFORE the offer of $142,000. Nurses here can easily make $120K/yr at this
time-- and perhaps more. And that $142K was JUST salary, not with the
benefits thrown in it. On top of the 21.5% salary increase over a 4 year
period, the hospital is also offering a $2100 bonus to every RN if there is
no strike and if the contract was settled by yesterday. Traveling companies
no longer necessarily pay more hourly than the hospitals do up here,
although housing or a housing allowance is on top of the salary (and counts
as taxable income). Even when I last worked as a traveler here exactly 4
years ago as a RN (which is how I was able to relocate here and start
looking for a NP position) I don't think I made more than the staff nurses
but I did make a killing on my housing allowance by finding something much
cheaper than my allowance and pocketing the difference.
Here's a link to an article that also talks about the strike and the salary
offer........... it's basically is the same article that was in the SF
Chronicle

I find this hard to believe, being in So. Calif. and looking at job
openings
every day on monster, careerbuilder, nurse.com and hotjobs. Maybe this
includes the value of the benefits? Not even travel companies pay that
much.
