On a more serious note, check out November 2007 Consumer Reports article
at page 12 entitled: "Treatment Traps To Avoid...Insured, You're Money In
the Bank to the health-care system".
In cites, among other seemingly obvious truths "Experts estimate that the
nation's $2 trillion annual health-care tab is one-third to one-half
higher than need be, in part because of overuse of costly treatments and
unnecessary care." And, "People who live in regions of the country with
an oversupply of specialists and hospitals are subjected to unneccessary
treatments and procedures that in many cases make them sicker."
But, before anyone send congrats to Consumer Reports, remember that in
years past they have suggested that if the fees are comparable see a
Doctor rather than a NP, ie. something on the order of "Don't let the
Doctors' staff pass you off to the Doctor's 'nurse' ". The article also
touts the importance of having a 'medical home' with emphasis on
prevention, management of care, health education, lifestyle changes such
as exercise, weight loss, etc. etc. I don't see 'NP' or 'PA' mentioned
even once, but I did see a quote from an MD "About 80% of what we(the
royal we again) do in medicine today is not backed up by solid
evidence......."
