Yes! It would be an amazing story, and it would do so much for that school, for that counry's healthcare situation. Wouldnt it be great if those children were exposed to the profession of Nurse Practitioner? Then they could do the training, graduate and really make a difference in their own country. Not only is it an incredible story line, much more fascinating than some of those celebrity or fashion shows she has on at times, but with Oprah's fame, it would really put the spotlight on NPs as one of the solutions to the healthcare crisis, and at the same time truly help her cause, and so many people would be helped. It is just a manner of how to get this story to Oprah's ears in a way she can hear it. She may have "medical" screeners, who knows. It is incredible, I have often wondered when you hear people in her audience announce what they do, I have yearned to hear "I am a Nurse Practitioner" and hear Oprah say "what?" "what is that?" ... but I have never seen that. I
like the Barak Obama angle. I have not even heard him speak of healthcare like I have heard Hillary Clinton..

I have noticed in general that whether it is Hollywood, or New York, Chicago, wherever these celebrities or talk show hosts are, they usually have a "doctor" that is part of their network.. occasionally they have a "nurse" but the nurse usually talks about how to protect from sunburn or something very non provider like. Very defined roles.. Oprah may have even been approached by the AMA or the doctors she has relationships with as a preventative strategy, and may have a pre conceived idea, or had her perception skewed about other non physician providers, who knows?

So I think it is a great strategy to approach it from the Nursing not Nurse Practitioner angle, and then once we are on, we can go from there. In addition, think how much more accessible the NP profession is to these students in Africa than going to medical school is?
And the scholarships are wide open to African Americans, it is so true. How exciting if Oprah sponsored an NP student! But to get on with Oprah we would have to have a very creative nerve striking pitch and way to get it pitched in the first place.

Send her the demographics on the huge underrepresentation of blacks in the
role of Nurse Practitioner - ask her why she thinks that is? Ask her if
she or any of her sponsors really give a Sh** about it - ask her to put
both her money and her mouth where you hope her heart is. Ask her if she
has considered doing a show with Black, Hispanic, etc. Nurses to advertise
that this is a profession which is wide open to young Blacks with
scholarhips, and comparatively huge salaries & all the room in the world
to advance based on hard work, personality, intelligence and MERIT! Hmmm?
Why wouldn't she want young Blacks to know that? Maybe she'd sponsor,
$$$, a group of NPs to go visit the school in Africa she's sponsored for
young Black/African women to speak about careers in Nursing? Maybe she'd
sponsor a group of American Nurses to travel to her favorite African hot
spot and do Malaria, AIDs, etc. education/work? Maybe write a letter to
candidate Barak Obama (sorry about spelling) and ask him where he AND
Oprah (his sort of sponsor now) stand on Blacks entering Nursing? What
could he possibly say, that Nursing is not a good choice for young Black
women??? Send a copy of his response to Oprah.
