CARRBORO -- Some of Carrboro's most avid dog owners came to Weaver Street Market on Sunday for the 6th annual Weiner Dog Day.

"We love Dachshunds and we think it's great to get everyone together and foster good pet ownership," said Libby Bucholz, organizer of the event and a volunteer for the local wing of the nonprofit organization Dachshund Rescue of North America.

More than 50 Dachshund owners agreed and attended the event, which boasted an obstacle course as well as several contests including best costume.

The winner of the best costume contest was Mollie, a 7-year-old Dachshund whose hot dog stand-inspired ensemble received a warm reception from the crowd.

Leslie Moyer, Mollie's owner, said there were more Dachshunds attending the event than she expected.

"I think it should be the state dog or something," she said.

Paula Sumner, who was accompanied by her dog Copper, said she had been attending Weiner Dog Day for several years, but that it was the first time she had opted to dress her beloved dog for the occasion.

"There were other, wilder costumes, but I didn't know how she'd take to the hat," Sumner said, as Copper sported a witch's hat and other Halloween clothing.

Aside from allowing some of Orange County's canine companions to strut their stuff in costumes ranging from Peter Pan to a hula dancer, the event also sought to spread the word on adoption and good pet ownership.

Pam Stephens, a volunteer and member of Dachshund Rescue in Durham, helped to oversee a pen housing several dogs from the rescue center, some of who were up for adoption.

Stephens said she had helped to place close to 30 Dachshunds with owners from as far away as upstate New York. The center itself has helped to find homes for more than 800 displaced Dachshunds this year alone.

Stephens said their personalities were a big draw for many people who decided to become Dachshund owners.

"Some people call it stubborn, some people call it tenacity," she said. Dachshunds are "a big dog in a little-dog body."

Event newcomers Jill Hunter and her 5-year-old son, Corbin, were excited about Weiner Dog Day.

The Hunters have a fondness for the breed, though they don't have a Dachshund and aren't planning on purchasing or adopting one soon.

"We don't have any dogs. We have kids instead," Hunter said jokingly.

I just realized the link you posted is NOT ACC which could explain the
difference. Go to www.amcollege.org and sign up through there.
Come stir things up. And couldn’t see your cute wiener, ahem, Copper. You
had to join to see.

Not quite sure what you're talking about as the ACC listserve is very active
and I've never received any spam what-so-ever from it. I'm sure Andy
wouldn't allow it!

because there is a banner there about an endorsement by the ACC. Did I go to
