Another update on Linda for those who've not been able to access her
CarePage:
Hello Everyone:
I have another update on Linda for you.
Well, tonight we found out why Linda was having fevers. Turns out she has a
bacterial infection. Though it is not uncommon to have fevers after surgery,
especially ones like this one, this situation is a little frustrating for
me. Every doctor that Linda needed to see prior to discharge received a list
of 12 questions. None where anything of significant difficulty, just
questions relating to concerns and things I should keep an eye out for. One
of the questions was whether they had received the results from her previous
nights blood work (taken because of her fever activity). Each doc said it
was fine with no indication of problems.
Linda and I both reiterated the fact that she has a selective IGA deficiency
and therefore any infection that could be contract must be treated
aggressively or it could risk further problems and after what she underwent,
could put her at grave risk of complications. Each doctor once again stated
that there was nothing abnormal once again. We actually found out because
Linda can be very persuasive and with her past experience as a critical care
nurse prior to her becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she acquired this
information from an unnamed staffer and access to her chart. For you medical
providers, her differentials eschewed to the left (sags where elevated)
where as a normal individual who has contracted an infection would generally
have an elevated white blood cell count.
This truly goes to show you that when a loved one goes in for medical care,
it is imperative that you know and understand any condition that they may
have and not to simply rely on or expect the medical providers to have all
of the answers. Now I have to have a polite conversation with the doctors
that I had previously inquired about the blood test results to express my
disappointment at this misunderstanding of my question. Maybe it is possible
that I asked the question the wrong way.
With this infection, her IGA DIFFICENCY THAT REQUIRES AGGRESSIVE TREATMENT
SHOULD AN INFECTION PRESENT ITSELF, and the fact that we are out of towners,
I am not sure how they will handle this here or whether they will chance it
and follow through with discharging her. She is still up and walking around
and under normal circumstances, she would have been ok to be discharged but
I am afraid that may be a false sense of security. As soon as I know more, I
will post it.
Just to make sure that you don't forget, I truly do appreciate the continued
support that you all have provided us.
Robert
