    "CDC: No  Intestinal Problem Link With Merck Rotavirus Vaccine"

Data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC) and 
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicate that Merck's  Rotateq rotavirus 
vaccine does not heighten the risk of intussusception.  According to 
information that will be presented to CDC's Advisory  Committee on Immunization 
Practices by CDC and FDA officials on Thursday,  between March 2006 and Aug. 31, 
2007, there have only been 160 confirmed  reports of intussusception out of 9.1 
million doses of Rotateq  administered--a rate lower than than what would be 
expected in the general  population not getting the vaccine. Of the 160 cases, 47 
were reported  within three weeks after receiving the first of three rounds 
of the  vaccine.
