"CDC: No Intestinal Problem Link With Merck Rotavirus Vaccine"
CNNMoney (10/24/07) Corbett Dooren, Jennifer
Data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicate that Merck's Rotateq rotavirus
vaccine does not heighten the risk of intussusception. According to
information that will be presented to CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices by CDC and FDA officials on Thursday, between March 2006 and Aug. 31,
2007, there have only been 160 confirmed reports of intussusception out of 9.1
million doses of Rotateq administered--a rate lower than than what would be
expected in the general population not getting the vaccine. Of the 160 cases, 47
were reported within three weeks after receiving the first of three rounds
of the vaccine.
