I guess we fall into "all others of the health care team".. but their mission statement of "patient centered care" puzzles me. That should not be a NEW concept. Isnt that what care is supposed to be about, the patient? And also, what is funny, is that just a few weeks ago, I saw an article in one of the medical journals that Primary Care Physicians are now debating the need for an Annual exam, that it might be a waste of time and money.. so it seems as if the mission of what a primary care home is, is all over the place. There was so much talk generated from the AMA regarding the retail clinics, and how it disrupts the patient-doctor relationship, and now we hear that they may think patients do not need an annual exam to go over health promotion, and disease screening.

But in real life, I keep hearing stories of how patients are treated like cattle. And one patient who just switched over to me for her pcp, said she had been going to the same "medical home" and the same pcp doc for 20 years. But when she had breast cancer, and a mastectomy, he never called her, and has not called her to this day, and it has been over a year. So when she switched, they said "are you sure you want to leave us?" and she told them why. Now that is sad, and that is what a medical home and physician-patient relationship should NOT be. That much is clear. My philosophy is simple, treat patients the way I want to be treated, that is it. Carla Anderson, FNP/Oregon

While I agree with much of this statement, our TOTAL omission in their
statement shows us our true value to these organizations. I suppose we are
not a significant figure in patient centered primary care. The fact that we
are not really mentioned once as NPs or PAs is astounding. AND these
organizations think that by not addressing the fact that we are also a
significant part of the team, that we will somehow be swayed towards them?
Not while the retail clinics laud NPs and PAs. Sad.
I am not a fan of retail clinics very much but keeping us invisible is not
the way to win our support or friendship.
These groups continue to wish us invisible.
