Shelby,
when i was a new NP in a rural health clinic with a new MD, he introduced me as 'his' nurse practitioner. I immediately saw red. I spoke to him afterwards and asked him not to introduce me that way. I said he did not hire me, he was not paying me and we both worked for the national health service, so I was his colleague and not his employee. He was taken aback, but he never introduced me like that again. He said he had never worked with an NP before, and distantly knew about PAs from his training. We worked well together for the next 2 yrs when I left. This was back in 1981 (did I really write back in..?)lol.

I totally agree with your views. It burns me up when the medical director of
our facility refers to the ARNP's who work there as "my nurse
practitioners". As if he would have a clue what I do, much less be able to
review all the work we do.
So what can we do to change this perception? Just telling patients our names
and titles doesn't solve the problem for me.
Regards,
Shelby Havens, ARNP
