[NPInfo] Jeff's letter & being invisable

Chris--
Are they really your MAs? Are you employing them? Do you pay them? What
makes them "your" MAs? I had a clinic manager (a former used car salesman--
and a bad one at that) who, pumped up what his own sense of importance over
his new position, used to constantly refer to me as "His NP". I blew a
gasket in a very short period of time and told him that, under no condition,
was I "his" NP or "his" anything and until the day he paid my salary out of
his own pocket, he was to refrain from referring to me as "his". He was so
surprised-- #1 that I would be offended and #2 because he (supposedly)
wasn't even aware he was doing it. But he stopped the nasty habit. Before I
had to kill him. I see this as different than using the term "my medical
director" as that denotes a position above you and not patronizing as using
the possessive "my" to someone lower on the food chain than yourself.

I agree, pick your battles, On the other hand, I have never been offended
when referred to as "my NP". It could be partly a term of endearment, he may
really like his NPs. I do refer to my clinic staff as "my medical assistant
will...." to patients and it does not bother them. I introduce docs to
patients when I ask for a consult in the ER as "my medical director" or "my
collaborating MD".

Paula:

Thanks, I guess I should speak up about it and let him know that his
reference is offensive. But I've got to pick my battles, and sometimes they
are multitude.

Cheers,

Shelby
