I feel your pain, concerning the term "assistant". Please keep in mind that 
title "nurse" often means "handmaiden" to the general public. When I 
enrolled in nursing school, I was motivated by the desire to take care of 
patients. I was never, ever motivated to be any MD's handmaiden. My primary 
professional relationship is with my patients, and not with physicians. I 
never wanted to be anybody's sidekick or assistant. But physicians rule the 
medical profession. What can I do about that? Not much.
