Dave,
That is wonderful that you had this phone conversation! It sounds like Dr Goldberg really lost sleep over your words, and did not realize the impact his words and others that represent the AMA in the media can have on NPs and PAs and the public. Your letter was so well written, and got the point across so clearly. I am so glad he called you, and hopefully it will have much farther ramifications than between you and him. Hopefully, this created a real change in his views or at least he realized in a new way how the media portrays things. As you said, at least he called and put himself in a position to listen, so that sounds sincere. Lets hope it keeps up. Thank you for what you did. Carla/Portland

I received a phone call tonight at home from Dr. Goldberg, President of the
Medical Society of the State of NY. I did previously post the e-letter I
sent to him. He started out by telling me that my letter touched him (or
something very close to that) and that he needed to explain what happened.
The first thing he did was tell me that the TV station spoke to him for 45
minutes and chopped up what he said to where some of the meaning was truly
lost. He told me he never meant that NPs would ³miss things².
He was truly surprised by my being extremely bothered by what I saw as
organized medicine putting NPs and PAs down as clinicians. I told him that
this is the spin that has come out of the AMA and he does not have to admit
it, but it has not been lost on us. I stressed it does physicians and their
relations with NPs and PAs no good and in fact causes a considerable amount
of concern and withdrawal when we are attacked that way. He told me some
things I can not put in writing.
He and I did not B.S. each other at all. We spoke quite frankly. We talked
about many things from practicing 30 years ago to making house calls in
Brooklyn.
I think he actually listened. It will not be hard for us to tell. I have
never spoken more frankly with any physician in power, as I did with him
tonight. He gave me the time and space to vent fully. He did not have to,
and could have not called at all. We spoke for almost an hour. He went out
of his way to listen as did I.
Very interesting conversation.
Dave
