My dearest Shelby,
If it were not for the utter and complete lack of winter, GREAT sailing
weather, and the 100 year avearage of 361 days of sunshine each year here on
the Suncoast, I'd leave Florida like it was a communist gulag.
I'm in Florida for only one reason....I can't hack seasonal affective
disorder and living in the cold white north. NOBODY hates winter more than
me. Every time I think of moving out of this backward state, the tradewinds
start to blow in November and I'm hooked again! For anyone who has never
felt the trades blowing through an open home at Christmas, my advice is to
avoid the experience at all cost: It will mar your capacity to return to
the Arctic (Arctic = north of Interstate 4).
I feel your pain. And totally share your dismay over the BON and FNA.
Can we move New Mexico about 500 miles closer to the equator and over to the
coast? I'd be there in an instant if we could.

Thanks for your comments. There actually is no board of nursing in Florida,
I used that term loosely in my earlier post. What we have is an umbrella
agency called the Department of Health.
The Florida Nurses Association supports protocols in this state. I stopped
trying to be active in the FNA after they told me they had no intention of
trying to get rid of protocols (i.e. - physician supervision).
I believe the person to whom I spoke was a nurse. She spoke to me in a very
clipped, preachy tone, kind of like the manner in which a parent might
address their mouthy teenaged daughter who was acting a little too big for
her britches. Sistah-girl made it CLEAR that she didn't want to hear about
any uppity nurse trying to practice independently. Nurses MUST work under
the supervision of a doctor, her attitude implied, and this outmoded
philosophy is carved in stone in Tallahassee, right there next to the 10
commandments.
In THIS state, we are not gonna have any of that outlandish, liberal
thinking that goes on in Oregon and New Mexico, her metacommunication
implied. We do things the RIGHT way here in Florida, and everybody knows the
natural order of things is that a nurse's place is under a doctor's thumb.
End of story.
And end of my rant.
Best Regards,
Shelby Havens, ARNP
