[NPInfo]: Faculty responsibility & preceptors

I work as faculty at a nursing school with NP program. We try to work
with our preceptors to make certain the preceptor and student are a good
fit. We send a copy of the course objectives, schedule and evaluation
sheets at the beginning of the semester. We make at least one visit to
see the student at work in the preceptor's clinic. We make more visits
if needed. WE have a great group of preceptors we use and they seem to
enjoy our students. We ask before we send a student and the preceptor
can always say no need a break, not this time or just don't want any
students. The preceptors are given my name, number, email address and
can call me at any time with problems or concerns.
We value our preceptors and truly appreciate their contributions to our
program. We also send certificates out to show the hours they spent
precepting. 120 hrs equal one of the requirements for Certification
renewal.
I hate to lose good preceptors, it is hard work, I take students with me
at times also. Please don't say no to precepting, you make a difference
in the lives of new NPs.
Melissa

There seems to be issues in students obtaining preceptors and this is
the
schools obligation. If the MS program can not arrange for decent
preceptors
then
there needs to be less students admitted to the programs.
Many times the preceptors are abused.
I have been a preceptor and never had the university make any contact
with
me.
Nance respons: Sigh... this disheartens me if it's occurring...
Preceptors,
please do contact the department chair in schools where your preceptees
come
from... It's unacceptable to have, what I consider, students "dumped"
on
preceptors.
Preceptors... you do have rights... one of them is to work along with
faculty of record whose responsibility it is to be in contact with you
at the
beginning of the semester and prn throughout in order to guide the
student's
education. Also, if a student is doing poorly, notify faculty who must
certainly
work with you to sort out what the issues are, counsel the student with
you,
etc etc. Yes, sometimes students are even pulled out of clinical...
Do you know? The hours that you put in precepting apply towar
re-certification? If you haven't received a letter from the school
verifying you've
precepted and for how many hours please make request. Also review
recert criteria
for credentialing body to see how hours are applied.
I've worn both hats during my career... am totally sensitive to the
plight
of the preceptor and what can be termed preceptor abuse. I advocate for
you.
You're not powerless.
