[NPInfo]: Alumni responsibility & skills education in NP programs

Thanks for your response Nancy. I also believe the schools have a
responsibility to question their graduates on how the programs might be
enhanced. I graduated from a very good program, but believe with the
programs that are condensed into 2 years full time or 3 years part-time
there simply wasn't enough time to squeeze everything in. It is great if you
an expert at EKG interp, suturing, and M/S (no not MS), but there are many
out there, as evidenced by classes covering that content, that are packed at
ANCC and other educational offerings, that haven't had the opportunity, or
just appreciate the opportunity to improve their skills.
I appreciate your suggestion of offering to give classes, but sorry, my
hours at work are long-I have a family, social obligations and precept
students. I also belong to my professional organizations, attend Clinical
Conferences to enhance my skills. I teach all day long, working with
patients and students one on one. I certainly could teach a class on top of
it all if I were superwoman (we live > 1 hour from the nearest school) or
really wanted to do it, but realistically I don't want to do that with my
free ??? time. I am smiling when I say this. I truely love my job and my
life. Don't you think the schools could offer electives for enhanced
clinical skills in the DNP programs. That is my main point.
Thanks for the discussion.
Marilyn Dean

A dedicated class to EKG interp.
More procedures (even simple ones like lesion removal).
Suturing beyond basic.
More emphasis on MS evaluation.
Anatomy class with a cadaver.

Hi again....

I've commented on the above in previous e-mails...
I also suggest you contact your programs and put in writing what you feel
was missing...
As the "consumers" of education certainly feel free to communicate this....
I suggest you write directly to "curriculum committee" in your school of
nursing...
You might even offer to put together and/or teach a CE course or
elective...
or... guest lecture in an established course.

Also, as alumni, we have responsibility to those that follow us....
