Reply- May I respectful ask you to consider the following? Do not assume all aspects of practice are second nature to your colleague. I have done this work for years now and see folks who float from patient to patient, without breaking a sweat, and seem to know everything. Yet with a little digging, I have found out they are like watching a duck swim, smooth on surface, paddling like the dickens below the water. So, the appearance of being effortless in clinical decision making was just that- an appearance, while lots of processing was going on. Others seem to sweat out every decision, sometimes even verbally. Shared an office once with someone who spoke darn near each decision aloud. Was tough for me at first then I learned to tune it out. From the outside, the "verbalizer" might have appeared unsure while the "swimming duck" looked confident. All in all, both had great clinical strengths, a few weaker points but knew when to get help, and were superb clinicians. I have seen countless different examples of these folks, NPs, PAs, MDs.
And years of practice, seeing the same dx over and over again certainly helps! Dr. Margaret A.
