If I'm not mistaken, I think it was Marty who brought up the lawsuits.

Somehow I got caught in the middle of this thread with my comments about an NP
running a retail clinic versus someone with a business background.? I did not
comment on any NPs being sued.? I am not sure what "nurses" you are referring
to.? Nps who are reportedly being sued?? Or other NPs who lost their jobs when
the retail clinic closed.

Debbie,

Please ask the nurses, if they are comfortable to contact me directly.? I am
conducting a conference in the spring of next year (March 28-30, 2009)?on
business issues relatd to?advanced nursing ?practice and I am trying to develop
a comprehensive curriculum on the business issues.? Carolyn Buppert and Diane
Smith, an NP who has franchised her business have agreed to speak.? Other
corporate types, lawyers and accountants have agreed to present also.? And, I
have invited other NPs and CNSs at I know to come and speak.? In short, I want
us to cover the most current issues/topics on the entrepreneural front.?? So, if

they would contact me and share enough that we could develop a presentation on
the issues, I would appreciate it.? We can maintain their confidentiality.

Thanks,

I guess you will have to ask Marty this one.? I don't know about the nurse
practitioners who are being sued.
Deb

While I believe these facilities can have an excellent role for the public and
us as providers, they keep allowing "business" to dictate over quality care. I
know there are several NPs that are being sued for sticking to the "corporate
policies", and that may also have a backlash effect on us. These clinics are
growing too rapidly, and many, without any real though except the dollar sign.
As professionals, we need to be careful or it will only support those physicians

that are complaining already. Marty?

Actually, my scenario is the exact opposite.? The company I worked for was
started by an NP, a very well known NP.? However, she did not have an astute
business sense and as a result some poor decisions were made.? While it is
healthcare, it is also a business and it truly takes a combination of both
skills in order for it to be successful.? We are an example of the other side of

the coin.

This is not surprising considering that a large number of these companies are
started by "business people" who see dollars and have little or no interest in
what they are portraying their goals to be, e.g., available and affordable
health care. This was one of the reasons I questioned the rapid growth from
early on. In at least 2 companies, one owned and managed by not one person who
had any health care experience, they came up with their business plan after
visiting multiple similar clinics and stealing what they could, but, they forgot

that children needed liquids, and they did not have one on their mandated
formulary.?
?
Another company, insisted that their "template" be used on every patient, which
was not composed by anyone with a health care background. If you followed their
template, (and you were expected to use the entire program), you would always
come up with a level 5 visit.?
