[NPInfo] Title Question

I work in a large VA hospital affiliated with Stanford University-- we have
GOBS of doctors running around the place... Psychology PhDs, Research PhDs,
PharmDs, PT and OT "D"s, and me, the only DNP-- and that's just in our
Spinal Cord Injury center alone. We're a VERY informal close-knit place
where the patients and staff are like family so seldom does one go around
using their "Dr" titles-- except the psychologists, who always identify
themselves as psychologists to the patients. Basically, patients and staff
are all addressed by their first names. But, as far as I know, the VA has no
formal policy that addresses this. I don't ever personally use my title but
a couple of patients who know about my new DNP love to call me "Dr Dena"--
which they can now legally do. And the patients certainly know I'm a NP.

Subject: [NPInfo] Title Question

Greetings to all, my question is to all on the list. Does your clinical
facility have a policy for non MD's using the salutation "doctor". I realize
that
the AANP just released a position statement on this subject, my real
question: How many of you with doctorates, PHD,DNS,DPH,DNP,etc.use the title
and
have you run into any problems. Please answer off list, it's just easier. A
copy
of your policy would be great.
FYI, here in Pennsylvania the nurse practice act states "a CRNP with a
doctorate has to inform the patient they are not a medical doctor or a
doctor of
osteopathy" Everyone I know does just that.

Thanks for responding. aa
