[NPInfo] Question about FNP status in North Carolina

Just because you graduate from a program and have a MSN, doesn't mean you
can call yourself a NP. In most, if not all states, one must apply to the
state BON for recognition and approval to practice as a NP-- and you can't
use the title until the state gives you permission to do so. In CA, my
nursing license has not only my RN license number but also a separate NP
certificate number. Without that number, I can neither work as, or legally
call myself, a NP in the state. When I renew my nursing license every two
years, I must also renew (with an extra fee) my NP certificate. If your
friend has not kept up her NP license/certification in her state, she is
undoubtedly right in saying that she currently isn't one there. Just as it's
true that you can't call yourself a RN if you finished a nursing program but
didn't take the NCLEX or be granted a RN license from your state. Even
though you might have finished law school, you aren't a lawyer until you
pass the bar and the state SAYS you're a lawyer.

Subject: [NPInfo] Question about FNP status in North Carolina

I have an FNP friend in NC who has not worked as an FNP for a number of
years. She said due to NC rules, that she can't call herself an NP since
she's
not working as one, and that makes no sense to me because she graduated the

program and has an MSN. The question came up when I was mentioning to her
about
marketing to attorneys to do med mal cases involving FNPs.
