Hi Gail,
Are you speaking of a medical director? Usually a Medical Director's duties is defined by the facility in which they work..in the doctor's own contract, such as "attending so many meetings", being available for all provider issues, and they get paid a certain amount extra per month for this..
Are you referring to a Supervising Physician? The California State BON has a clear template for how the protocols are written, and you just write your own if you don't have them (as I did at many facilities in California), and then you, your supervising physician, and administrator of your clinic will sign. Last I heard the supervising physician was supposed to supervise no more than 4 nps at a time, but you can keep your protocols broad, and supervision can be kept broad as well as per your state regs. IE the doc works in the same clinic, and is available to you if needed, and reviews a certain percentage of your charts that you all decide together when you write your protocols and reviews and co signs your prescriptions for the 1st 6 months after you graduate. The California Board has a great template for all this, including a different template for narcotic prescriptions, and how to include these in your protocols.
I found that the NP has to take the initiative, and organize all this, not the physician. Especially if the physician has never been a supervising doc before.
Hope that helps,

I think I have finally found a new medical director to replace the one who
decided he couldn't take on another office. He's asking what I would need
from him besides being available to consult with the NP and sign off on
protocols. Does any one have an established list?
