Hi Julie,

Perhaps it's a state thing. I'm in WA (in my own office) and am credentialed
and get paid by Cigna.

I am the np referred to that is on bcbs as a provider. I am selfemployed and
bill all insurance companies directly (not under md) and get paid. It has
been an uphill battle and took me years to accomplish as insurance companies
just either don't honestly know what to do with us or don't want to
recognize us. Medicare and medicaid are light years ahead of them
reimbursuring me directly for many many years. The one and only insurance
company I am not on is cigna. They even put in writing that they do not
recognize nor credential np's independently which is illegial in the state
of tx. I contacted my np organization of which I am a member via email and
phone sending supporting documentation of what cigna was doing asking for
their help. They never responded. I was so disapointed. Then I hired a
lawyer to help me. For months I have never seen such a run a round in
writing btwn cigna and the lawyer. She told them what they were doing was
illegal and essentially they are a big cor!
peration and really don't care. I finally gave up as I just couldn't
financially afford the lawyer anymore. If anyone out there has any
suggestions I am open. Meanwhile I am grateful for all my other wins with
insurance companies. Just thought I'd share with ya'll.

Shelby: A friend of mine in Texas..an FNP, fought BC/BS in Texas until they
finally added her as a provider. So one must be tenacious! Pat M

Actually, he would have a very valid point in Florida. The largest health
insurance company down here is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, and they
do not contract with nurse practitioners. Everything gets billed "incidental

to" the physician's work. A nurse practitioner cannot earn money for a
physician's practice under this arrangement.

with you that most docs still do not understand what a NP can bring to their

practice. I left my hospital position today and took a full time job with my

retail clinic. One of the docs I work with at the hospital asked why I was
leaving and I said "because you didn't offer me a job" joking a little with
him. He answered seriously, "I can't afford to pay you!" I told him he
needed to reframe the idea and think how much money I could EARN for his
practice. But he still doesn't get it. > > Sue D in MI> > > > >
