Here's a good link to DM and VitD

Also, for your MS patient, one of my patients is enrolled in a clinical
study at UCSF involving statins in helping to prevent or reduce the plague
build-up in the brain. Theory is that plague is plague and if the statins
can reduce plague in one area of the body, maybe it can do it in others?
Interesting idea.

Great Peg.
I just spoke last night to a woman with MS, who said she has been working
on getting her Vitamin D up to the middle normal ranges by taking 2,000 iu's
a day, and it has taken 6 mos, but she is almost there. She said she does
not know how to describe it just that she "feels better"... this is
wonderful. I did not get Karen's post (attached to yours) so I wonder if
some of the list serve mail gets missed)... but my own Vit D3 was 19, when
checked 2 mos ago, and I have to admit I was not taking it regularly but
have been taking 2,000 units for a couple weeks now. When I ran every day
in sunny San Diego, I never gave it a thought.
But I have been checking Vit D levels much more frequently, however it has
mostly been in women. I am now going to check consistently with those with
depression.

Here is a short article I wrote a couple of years back on vit D and body
pain. I will be revising this for an upcoming email newsletter.

If for no other reason, pain contributes to depression. Go ahead and treat.
I must say that treating Vit D deficiency has been one of the most
miraculous and rewarding parts of my 21+ year NP practice. The results are
often stunning, with chronic diffuse pain simply resolving without any
additional therapy. People will need to be advised that it takes a few
months of therapy prior to feeling better, but then muscle strength is
usually much improved, generalized achiness better, exercise easier. There
is evidence that lung function is also greatly improved (will look for
citation and send along) so keep this in mind with your COPD patients.

response to Carla's case study example, I attended an excellent CME
presentation last week in which the presenting MD suggested checking Vitamin
D as part of the baseline assessment with a new workup of depression. In
some circles it is becoming the standard of care. Frankly, I am not clear
how physiologically this deficiency contributes to depression. Any ideas out
there?> > Clearly, we know about SAD, but my understanding is that it is the
light that makes a difference eg the use of light therapy boxes in dreary
winter climates. For those who might be familiar with the research in this
arena of Vitamin D and depression, feel free to illuminate us on the list
