[NPInfo] DNP: Bait and switch?

I agree, that the DNP can be a positive move for NPs if we can manage the
politics. I have serious concerns about NPs being interested or willing to
take a certification exam that is connected to the medical boards- It will
take a lot of time and energy to refute the argument that if NPs are
certified by physicians, they should be regulated by them. I would rather
use that energy to treat my patients, reach out to mentor students, or a
hundred other things

My comment- Shelby, your comments are spot on. I have spoken at a number of
meetings about the NP profession's evolution to the DNP and have compared
this to changes in pharmacy (PharmD now well established as entry to
practice for 2 decades) and physical therapy (working very hard to move
forward to the DPT as part of a global change in the profession that allows
patients to access PT services directly without a provider order). These
professions changed, their educational requirements changed, and pharmacy
has flourished as a result.
When I became a NP, about 1/2 were MS prepared (like me), 1/2 certificate
grads. We survived, thrived through that transition. I predict the same will
happen with the movement to the DNP. Dr. Margaret A. Fitzgerald, DNP,

provider. It's funny that my biggest supporters are the physicians I work
with. I'm told by physicians over and over that I am better then most
physicians. Don't buy into this Nursing B.S. that you are second to anyone.
The ADN RN that I work with is no less then I was or am now or when I was an
ADN grad. Keep the focus on providing GREAT patient care and EVERYONE wins!
